Citrus fruit came into fashion artistically in the baroque age, with the rise of the still life painting. Peeled lemons were often depicted, as the difficulty of rendering the glistening flesh and pitted skin was the ultimate proof of artistic skill.
Orange are also believed to be the fruit which granted immortality in Greek mythology, guarded by the Hesperides in Hera's garden.
